Houyuan shares that at 25 years old, he came to Canada from China. He talks about the international student experience of internalized racism and racism. He notes that his first year in Canada was a major adjustment because he became introverted whereas he was an extrovert in China. He conveys the second year was better after learning the language and making connections. He offers learning from a colleague about confronting racism in that we need to learn the purpose. Is it to make enemies or to build connections?
Dr. Houyuan Luo was born and raised in mainland China. He came to Canada to complete his doctoral degree at the University of Alberta as an international student in 2014. He is a Registered Counselling/Clinical Psychologist in Ontario, Canada. He is a Certified Therapist in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) by the Canadian Association of CBT. He is also the Chair of the Counselling Psychology Section of the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) and the President-elect of the Association of Chinese Helping Professionals and Psychologists–International (ACHPPI). He is doing private practice in Toronto, Canada. He speaks English and Mandarin. He is passionate about leadership, multiple perspectives, thoughts and ideas, and interacting with people.
